Four ways to start becoming more inclusive at work
Posted on April 21, 2022
Having a diversity program is not enough. There needs to be action taken in order to create an inclusive environment for all. This includes things like ensuring that people of all marginalized groups feel welcome, heard, and accepted. It also means creating opportunities for everyone to succeed. By taking these steps, businesses can increase innovation, performance, and employee happiness while also decreasing turnover.
So why don’t more businesses take these steps? In part, it’s because they don’t want to appear “racist.” But the truth is, there’s no such thing as being “too diverse” or “too inclusive.” There’s only being actively anti-racist, which is something we should all aspire to be.
Here are four actions you can take TODAY to create a more inclusive culture:
- Make an effort to learn about and understand different cultures. This includes things like attending cultural events, reading books and articles, and listening to people’s stories.
- Be aware of your own biases and how they might impact your interactions with others. We all have biases, but it’s important to be aware of them so that we can work to overcome them.
- Make an effort to use inclusive language in both your written and spoken communications. This includes using gender-neutral terms and avoiding offensive terms or slang.
- Be an ally to marginalized groups. This includes things like using your privilege to help those who are not as fortunate, speaking up when you see someone being treated unfairly, and standing up for what’s right.
No one is perfect, but we can all strive to be better. By taking small steps to become more inclusive, we can make a big difference in the world.
